Top 5 reasons to visit Qatar

Most famous for its vast oil reserves, enormous wealth and meteoric rise to global economic power, Qatar is more than just black gold and business.

Already a popular stopover destination, Qatar is in the spotlight more than ever as it makes preparations to host the football World Cup in 2022. Whether you’re visiting for business, just passing through en-route or making plans for your World Cup stay, here are five of our favourite things to do in Qatar.

1. Dhow boat trip

Get your bearings and take in the city’s spectacular skyline from the water with a relaxing trip on a traditional Dhow boat. Head out in the early afternoon to enjoy a fresh BBQ lunch served on board or take to the waters in the evening to watch the sun set over Doha.

2. Shopping at Souq Waqif

For an authentic Qatari experience make your way to the Souq Waqif where you’ll find locals peddling their wares, with everything from traditional hand-made gifts to fragrant, colourful spices. This labyrinthine shopping bazaar is popular with both visitors and locals and is a great place to try some of the varied cuisines on offer in the city.

3. Desert dunes adventure

It would be a shame to leave Qatar without taking a trip to the desert to witness the breath-taking Qatari landscapes. Thrill-seekers will love the adrenaline rush of diving and drifting over the undulating dunes in a 4X4. Make sure to ask your driver to take you to see Khor Al Adaid, Qatar’s incredible inland sea.

4. Castles in the Sand

Before striking oil in the 1940s, Qatar’s economy was mainly based on pearl fishing and Al Zubarah was once a thriving port, bustling with fishermen and merchants. Dating back to the 1760s, the remains of Al Zubarah are now a UNESCO World Heritage site, comprising over 60 hectares of archaeological works.

5. Museum of Islamic Art

Housed in a spectacular building, which is worth the visit alone, this world-class museum boasts an extraordinary collection of art, encompassing creative works from over 1,400 years and three continents. What’s more it’s completely free of charge and the view across the city from the museum is one vista you won’t want to miss.
