Our story

We’ve come a long way since opening our doors in 1961, when husband and wife team, John and Rose Scott, started selling travel from a one-roomed office at the back of the record shop at 61 High Street.  As the trend for overseas travel steadily increased, combined with the rise in package holiday sales, the business grew and relocated to 69 High Street – the site of the first ever Greggs bakery and shop!

As the industry boomed, Travel Bureau flourished, opening a business travel department as well as selling holidays, and continued to grow each year. In 1976, following a successful career in the motor trade, John Scott Jr. joined the family business to add his skills to the mix. Founders Rose and John Sr. started to take a back seat from 1986, and in 1992 John Jr. and Jeff Bell officially took over the helm. 

By the mid-90s, over 40 travel experts worked for the local business, which had built strong relationships with the community, word of mouth recommendation about service and expertise helping the business to flourish and adapt in changing times.

As 21st century technology and the dawn of the internet delivered a world of choice for travellers, investment in technology and a focus on specialist niche markets carried the business forward successfully to John and Jeff’s retirement and the sale of the business in 2008.

Fast forward to 2019 and Travel Bureau is now run by joint Managing Directors, Jeanne Lally and Anne Bromley, who were part of the team that bought the business over ten years.  Jeanne’s background is in tour operating, working with TUI for over 30 years in a variety of roles from purchasing to sales, before returning to the North East from London. Following university, Anne worked across travel sectors – overseas, with tour operators and in corporate travel – and worked with Singapore Airlines in Manchester before joining Travel Bureau. In 2020, Anne celebrates 30 years with the business!

In 2012, the business unveiled a collaboration with luxury holiday company Kuoni, whose portfolio spans an amazing 88 countries. Proud to be an independent agent, Travel Bureau offers a wide choice of holidays from a wide range of luxury travel companies and welcoming this international brand to the High Street added a new dimension to Travel Bureau’s extensive portfolio. In the same year, 69 High Street received a stylish facelift and we love welcoming customers into our relaxed and comfortable shop.

Today, the business is not just a travel agent but a travel concierge service, offering tailor-made itineraries, weddings and honeymoons services, business and group travel, and all provided with a personal touch. Travel Bureau continues to flourish as we strive to deliver what today’s customers want from a modern travel company, combining the latest technology with exceptional service and first-class travel knowledge.

At the very heart of the Travel Bureau is a real sense of passion for travel. Our Personal Travel Experts continue to learn about new destinations (and learn more about old destinations!) so that they can offer up-to-date advice and first-hand recommendations to help craft the perfect trip for every client.
