Thailand: City-Beach-Adventure

Everything you could want from a honeymoon you can get in Thailand: it has stunning romantic scenery complete with breath-taking sunsets, culture, nightlife, great food and of course, the requisite beautiful beaches.

Thailand is the perfect place for outgoing and adventurous couples to celebrate their new life together; if you’re curious and willing to try new things you’ll really be able to make the most of this fantastic country. With that in mind, don’t be put off by the summer rainy season, there is something wonderfully romantic about getting caught in a tropical storm where the warm rain soaks you to the skin, and there is still plenty of sunshine between showers.

In our last blog we talked about a recent trend towards the “have it all honeymoon” and Thailand is the perfect place to combine city, beach and adventure for a great all-round honeymoon…

1) City

All trips to Thailand should start in Bangkok. The capital is alive with an incredible vibrancy that infects all visitors and, arriving in the city, you’ll instantly feel the buzz of anticipation that accompanies being in such a new and exciting place. Whether it be the bright yellows, greens and reds of the floating market or the deep, dazzling golds of the Grand Palace, Bangkok is a city full of colour just waiting to be explored.

Honeymooners should head to the Banyan Tree, this 5* hotel has gorgeous all-suite accommodation but its real draw is the fabulous Vertigo and Moon Bar rooftop restaurant. Photos really can’t do justice to the feeling you get looking out over Bangkok from this exclusive terrace on one of the tallest buildings in the city. Dinner and drinks (the bar has a fantastic cocktail list) with 360° panoramic views over Bangkok is a real romantic treat for newlyweds and a brilliant way to kick off your honeymoon in Thailand.

2) Beach

There are lots of beautiful spots to choose from along Thailand’s coast and on her many islands so here are a couple of our top recommendations.

Koh Samui and Hua Hin are great for honeymoons in the summer months as they are less wet than other islands. Hua Hin is a three-hour drive from Bangkok but definitely worth it if you’re looking for a beach resort with plenty to do and see beside the sea! Cape Nidhra is a 5* small luxury boutique hotel in Hua Hin where all rooms have private pools on their own balcony. Located right on the beachfront, waiters offer you frozen fruit and sweet treats to keep you cool as you lounge on sun beds. The hotel has a roof-top bar overlooking the beach that serves great cocktails and if you want to explore Hua Hin, the town’s delightful markets and restaurants are all close by.

If, on the other hand, you’re after a complete escape from the hustle and bustle, you couldn’t do better than Koh Jum Beach Villas. Bordering Phi Phi national marine park, which is famous for its white beaches and blue lagoons, Koh Jum provides the paradise experience without the touristy crowds of Koh Phi Phi islands. Koh Jum Beach Villas is a luxury resort where honeymoon couples can retreat to their own private pool villa or relax on one of the island’s quiet, secluded beaches and the island, renowned for the beauty of its sunsets, ranks highly in the romance stakes. There is excellent snorkelling and diving for those who want it and of course, great food. Just a short flight to Krabi and then a quick hop across to the island by boat, this desert island getaway can be reached easily from Bangkok.

3) Adventure

History buffs and film-lovers alike will get a kick out of visiting the famous “Bridge On the River Kwai”. The picturesque Kanchanaburi province, where the bridge is located, is also home to dense jungle famous for spectacular waterfalls, limestone caves and wildlife such as elephants, monkeys and cobras.

Thailand’s northernmost provinces of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are full of incredible sights like the white temple at Chiang Rai and, even further off the beaten track, the Crystal Pagoda in the spectacular hills surrounding Tha Thon.

If you’re up for a steep climb you must visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai, the remarkable golden temple has to be seen to be believed. Once you get to the top, the outstanding beauty of the mountain temple will make you forget all about the 309 steps you walked up to get there!

These northern areas also have fantastic night markets and wonderful food that you won’t find down south: make sure to try kao soi, a rich and spicy noodle soup often served up by roadside vendors.

Visit the Grand Palace, Bangkok.

This is one of the most beautiful examples of an ancient Siamese court. A spectacular landmark that used to be the residence of the Kings of Thailand.

Go to a night market.

Try out your bartering skills and soak up the atmosphere of Thailand’s bustling night time street markets.

Try street food.

For real authentic Thai cuisine ditch the hotel restaurant and dine like the locals.

Want to really push the boat out for an extra special experience? Why not travel on the Eastern and Oriental Express from Singapore to Thailand? Start your honeymoon in style with a romantic journey through the exotic countryside, stopping for a guided tour of Kanchanaburi before arriving in Bangkok.
