No matter how hard you try, you can’t possibly see, do, eat or drink everything there is to see, do, eat and drink in New York on one trip. The city is so full of iconic sights and tasty bites that you’d be hard-pressed to choose between the best, and well-meaning recommendations from friends, family and colleagues can leave you feeling under pressure not to miss anything. So, to help you enjoy a relaxing New York city-break and still leave feeling like you’ve made the most of your time, we’ve made a handy list of our top five NYC experiences to give you a little more wiggle room in your Big Apple itinerary.
1) Have a cocktail
Boy, does New York deliver up a good cocktail! They may be a touch pricier than here in the UK but the measures are proportionately more generous. Whether it’s a Champagne cocktail at a swanky hotel in Midtown, a classic Old Fashioned on the Lower East Side, or a crazy, green dill-pickle Bloody Mary at the trendiest bar in Greenwich Village, do yourself a favour and order that drink you’ve always wanted to try.
2) See the skyline
The Manhattan skyline is one of the most famous silhouettes in the world and there are so many fantastic ways to see it. For that movie moment magic go straight up the Empire State Building (fans of Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr in An Affair to Remember can blame watery eyes on the breeze), or head to the Top of the Rock if you’d rather have the Empire State Building in your sights. Book a table at the incredibly swish Top of the Standard in Chelsea if you’re celebrating a special occasion. For a more casual scene with a cracking view and some excellent Mexican food thrown into the mix, get over to Alma in Brooklyn to see the sun go down and the lights go up in Manhattan.
3) Visit a museum
New York is a paradise for culture-vultures with some of the world’s greatest museums and galleries across its five boroughs. Traditionalists could easily spend a whole day wandering around the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Natural History Museum is always popular. Those with a more contemporary eye should check out MoMA (the Museum of Modern Art) and the Guggenheim, or even take a stroll along the Highline and step down to some of the commercial galleries located along the way. History lovers are spoilt for choice with fascinating displays on the city’s past at Ellis Island and in the Tenement Museum among many others.
4) Eat a classic dish
Sad though it is, there simply aren’t enough meals in the day to try all the amazing food that New York has to offer. Everyone has their own opinion on where you should go to get the best bagel, the best slice of pizza or the best pie and you’d run yourself ragged trying to find them all! Take the pressure off and just promise yourself that you’ll eat one famous New York dish before you leave. Be it a classic Reuben sandwich, a hot dog with everything, the iconic giant salty pretzel or fluffy diner pancakes, you’re sure to get a thrill when you tuck in to that New York dish.
5) Cross the water
The Statue of Liberty is synonymous with New York and it would be a shame to leave the city without at least catching a glimpse of this famous lady. However, trips to the statue itself can be expensive and time consuming. Luckily for you, there are quicker ways to get a great view of the city’s guardian angel without spending a penny! Take the Staten Island Ferry for a free boat ride that will give you your fill of statue selfies. Just make sure you’re sitting on the right side of the boat – outside on the right from Manhattan to Staten Island and over on the left for the return journey. A stroll across the Brooklyn Bridge is another way to see the Statue of Liberty for free, granted its from a distance but the views from the bridge are so spectacular they more than compensate.
