Our honeymoon expert, Danielle, has recently been to Florence and thought that it made the perfect destination for a romantic Italian mini-moon!
Florence is the capital of the wonderful Italian region of Tuscany and a great base for exploring the olive groves and vineyards of the stunning Tuscan countryside. It’s easy to get to surrounding areas and the Chianti wine region is only an hour away, but before you venture off in search of Chianti’s famously delicious wines, there’s plenty to see and do in the beautiful city of Florence.
Florence, which was at the heart of the Renaissance, is a dream location for art-loving couples. The city itself, overflowing with architectural masterpieces, is as beautiful as the countless works of art housed in its many spectacular museums. The Uffizi gallery, boasting famous pieces by Botticelli, Michelangelo, Titian and many more, is a must-see and the magnificent Il Duomo Di Firenze (Florence’s cathedral) is a sight not to be missed.
Like most of Italy, Florence is all about style, oozing continental cool with its vibrant café culture. Couples will love sipping espressos alongside the locals in Florentine piazzas and soaking up the atmosphere of this fashionable city. There are plenty of restaurants and trendy bars serving beautiful seasonal food made with local ingredients, fine wines from nearby Chianti and, of course, Prosecco – a must for honeymooners in Italy! Food-loving couples can indulge the senses with cooking classes and demonstrations showing off the very best of the region’s cuisine.
Florence is a compact city and as such it’s hard to go wrong with hotel location. The area around the stunning Piazza Della Repubblica is popular, with good hotel choices in walking distance of the grand square including the 5* Savoy and 4* Brunelleschi. Danielle recommends the opulent Brunelleschi, where, for that extra touch of luxury and romance, you can upgrade to a suite with an outdoor terrace and jacuzzi or first class views over Florence.
Florence is an all year round destination but the ideal time to visit weather-wise is from April to June and September to October as the mid-summer months can be very hot. From Newcastle or Manchester, it’s only a journey of a few hours to Florence, with a short car transfer after a direct flight to Pisa, making it the perfect location for a European mini-moon.
Danielle recommends a stay of 4-5 nights in Florence, giving couples plenty of time to explore the city at their leisure as well as having a day in the wine region of Chianti. Once in Florence it’s very easy to reach other Italian cities using excellent rail service (Rome and Milan are both less than two hours away) or by car (drive to the Tuscan coast or day-trip to Pisa) meaning that couples can easily extend their Florentine mini-moon into an Italian honeymoon.
DANIELLE’S TOP TIPS:
Take a perfume workshop and design your own individual honeymoon scent.
Make the most of the moment – learn more about Italy’s masterpieces with a private tour of the Uffizi.
Enjoy a glass of prosecco at a street café overlooking the Ponte Vecchio bridge.
DON’T LEAVE WITHOUT…
Danielle urges all couples to skip dinner one night and sample traditional antipasti served in many eateries throughout the city. Wash it down with a cool glass of Prosecco for the ultimate romantic experience in Florence.
