We asked Cox & Kings’ India expert, Greg Thurston, what he loves so much about the country and what his top tips are for really experiencing this fascinating destination.
Q – How long have you worked for Cox & Kings?
A – I’ve been with the company for seven years and hold the position of national account manager. It’s a wonderful place to work. Not only do we offer incredible tours around the world (many of which I’ve had the luxury of experiencing), it is also a very well-respected, established company with genuine links to India, dating back to 1758!
Q – Where have you visited in India?
A – I have been fortunate enough to visit India three times – spending most of my time in Rajasthan and the Himalayas. Last year I was lucky to spot tigers in Ranthambore and witness the Aarti ceremony from the banks of the River Ganges. I have also spent time in the neighbouring country of Sri Lanka.
Q – What is your most memorable experience in India and why?
A – One of my most memorable experiences in India was visiting The Golden Temple in Amritsar. It is the most beautiful, serene and welcoming religious site I have ever visited. Taking a tour of the kitchens, where thousands of local Sikhs are catered for every day, was incredible and strangely moving.
Q – Where is your all-time favourite destination?
A – This is a tough one as everywhere has something special to offer. It would probably have to be either Petra in Jordan or Iguazu Falls in Argentina. Both equally spectacular and dramatic.
Q – Any top tips for travelling to India?
A – Just go for it! Immerse yourself in the culture, the food, the sights and sounds. And, if you can afford it, staying in the Oberoi Amarvilas in Agra is a must. Waking up to sunrise over the Taj Mahal from your balcony is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and worth every penny.
