Sailing ships provide a truly unique way to cruise and harness the true spirit of adventure that travellers would have experienced when discovering new continents in days gone by. Powered by the zephyrs (although these days most sailing ships are also motored), you’ll glide into harbours or anchor off hidden coves with tranquil ease and intimate privacy.
For the most relaxed sailing holiday opt for a fully rigged three or five-mast ship or a traditional gullet cruise. The magnificent three and five-mast ships offer the ultimate sailing experience and are fully crewed with luxurious interiors, fine dining and superb onboard facilities. These larger sailing ships can take you out into open waters allowing you to explore a variety of countries on the same cruise. Traditional gullet cruises are popular around coastal Turkey, Greece and Croatia. These can be booked either privately or by cabin on a shared cruise and offer a laid-back and informal way to enjoy an island-hopping sailing trip.
For a more hands-on experience, skippered sailing boats and flotilla sailing holidays offer a real adventure. The former allows you to explore your destination in your own boat and at your own pace, with your own skipper. You can be as involved in the daily sailing as you want so it’s a great way to learn to sail or improve your sailing skills. The latter is a great experience to share with family and friends, letting you enjoy sailing independently but with backup close at hand. You’ll sail in small groups (a flotilla) with other like-minded people. There’ll be a lead crew vessel on hand to assist with everything from pointing out local sites of interest and coordinating the evening’s social scene, to mechanical support and sailing tuition before you start.
