Travel Bureau has been planning holidays to the Maldives for over 30 years and between them, our personal travel experts have visited this Indian Ocean paradise over 10 times!
So it’s fair to say we know this idyllic archipelago pretty well having explored every inch of it to find the best holiday and honeymoon recommendations for you. In two minds about whether the Maldives is right for you? Take a look at our top reasons to visit…
There’s an island for everyone
If remote and stripped back is what you’re after, there are plenty of islands to choose from in the Maldives that will give you the true castaway experience. However, if you’re worried about getting cabin fever or you’re someone who needs a bit more space and entertainment on your jollies, don’t be put off. Kurumathi Maldives is Kuoni’s most popular resort and being one of the largest it has a lot to offer, including a mile-long sandbank, a spa and its own diving school. Plus, with an impressive 12 restaurants and seven bars, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to dining options.
Experience local culture
For some people, the idea of spending day after day lying on the beach, reading a good book and taking a dip in the ocean is absolute heaven, but not everyone is content with taking it easy. If you’re a natural explorer, Dhigali Maldives in the remote Raa Atoll is a great choice. From here you can take a trip to a local island to experience Maldivian culture in a less-developed area of the archipelago. Head to the market, soak up the atmosphere from a café and get to grips with the day to day life of locals.
But speaking of beaches, they are spectacular! And if you can believe it, even better in real life than all the insta-worthy pics you’ve seen of pristine white sands and startling blue-green waters. One of the best beaches in the Maldives (I know, it’s hard to rank perfection!) can be found at Valassaru Maldives. The sweeping expanse of sparkling white sand fans out towards the ocean before the resort’s perfectly-placed infinity pool – the view doesn’t get much better than that!
Take a dive
Next to the beach, of course, is the ocean. Surrounded by the warm, crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is famous for its incredible reefs, teeming with colourful sea-life. Most resorts have a house reef, providing guests with amazing opportunities for snorkelling and diving. Sandies Bathala, a brand-new resort set to open in February 2019, is in one of the best locations to explore under the sea. The island has a PADI dive school and even offers night-snorkelling, giving a whole new perspective on the underwater world.
Families are welcome
Kids will love snorkelling and there’s plenty more for families to enjoy in the Maldives, with some great family-friendly resorts. Kurumba Maldives is a great island if you’re holidaying with kids, not least because it’s a quick transfer from the airport. At Kurumba, as well as snorkelling, kids can learn to surf and even have a guided diving lesson. For a special moment take the dolphin discovery cruise or plan a surprise sandbank picnic.
It is hard to top the Maldives for romance and there are stunning options for honeymooners all over the archipelago. Our experts know the islands inside out and can recommend the perfect resort to suit you, whether you’re after a boutique hideaway or a bells-and-whistles resort. Lunch on the Piano Deck (see below) in the middle of the lagoon at Baros Maldives is just one of the amazing honeymoon experiences we can tell you about. With only one resort on most islands, the majority of visitors just want to kick back and relax once they’ve arrived without worrying about a thing. This means that all-inclusive options in the Maldives are amazing, with some resorts taking the concept to a whole new level. At Kandolhu Maldives, your villa’s personal wine chiller will be stocked with 30 bottles of wine and you’ll get a sunset cruise with Champagne and canapés included.
Relax at the spa
Imagine how blissed out you’d be if you could have a spa treatment on every day of your holiday... Kuoni have created an Exclusive Spa Sunset Water Villa with Diamonds Athuruga. This amazing overwater villa is in the best location for watching the sunset over the ocean from your private deck and what’s more, when you book this villa you’ll receive a spa treatment per room on every day of your stay!
Overwater villas to die for
Dreamy water villas have become iconic of the Maldives and, of course, Athuruga isn’t the only place with these idyllic accommodations on offer. Sister property, Diamonds Thudufushi’s award-winning villas are some of the best on offer – their stunning villas are impeccably designed and even include an iMac pre-loaded with music for you to enjoy while you relax on your sun-bed.
